Competence to Excellence: Raising standards in teaching and learning

Mark speaking to German competitor

What does competence to excellence mean? A level of skill or ability in a specific field or subject? Possession of the required skills and knowledge to perform a task at the stated minimum pass level? Performance of competence is not to be denigrated; it is an important stage in a learner’s development. They need to reach this stage to gain their qualification, but this should not be a cap on the level of ambition. Learners need to be empowered to perform beyond competence in a competitive global marketplace, so it is with this in mind that we look for opportunities to inspire and encourage learners to strive for excellence.

During this workshop we discuss with teachers and trainers the journey from competence to excellence and how excellence is achievable for everyone. We explore practical methods, examples and resources used to raise aspirations and outcomes for learners, supporting more teachers and trainers to apply these into their curriculum planning and delivery.

Learning outcomes will include:
– understand the steps to develop excellence in learners
– identify the need for all learners to be engaged in a journey from competence to excellence
– explore practical methods to embed excellence in delivery of teaching and training
– explore resources to enhance and develop practice beyond the CPD event.
