Steven discovered his love for patisserie while studying at college. A fascination with sugar work quickly developed into a passion that set him on a new path.
After earning Best in Class for one of his sugar showpieces, his tutors at Hull College encouraged him to take part in WorldSkills UK, where his talent and determination led him from the National Finals to representing Team UK at WorldSkills Abu Dhabi.
“It was amazing! I got to travel, meet people from all over the world, and learn so much,” says Steven. “The training gave me confidence, problem-solving skills, and taught me how to stay calm under pressure.”
Before launching his own business, Steven refined his craft at Winteringham Fields, a Michelin-starred restaurant. The experience helped him perfect his technical skills and build the confidence to take the leap into entrepreneurship.
Opening Patisserie House marked the start of a new chapter. The lessons learned through WorldSkills UK have shaped every part of Steven’s journey as a business owner, from planning and organisation to creativity and leadership.
“Running a business comes with challenges every day,” he explains. “WorldSkills UK taught me how to think on my feet and find solutions quickly, which really helped when I started out.”
Steven now leads a small team at his thriving café and chocolate studio, using the skills excellence training from WorldSkills UK to develop his staff and help them reach their full potential. His approach not only raises standards within the business but also creates high-quality skilled employment and increases opportunities for the local community.
As a newly appointed WorldSkills UK Skills Champion, Steven is passionate about helping others discover their potential.
“I’m dyslexic, so I know how important it is to find what you’re good at and build on it,” he says.
“I want to show young people that with the right support and hard work, you can achieve amazing things.”
Steven’s story demonstrates how developing world-class skills builds confidence, drives innovation, and opens doors, from competing on the global stage to running a successful business, supporting his team, and strengthening the local economy.
