The CPD is designed to contribute to educators’ professional development by enhancing their approach to teaching and training. The seven main modules offer a practical approach to embedding excellence in technical and vocational teaching and training. These are arranged in a 7-step sequence to reflect the various stages learners pass through on their journey and to emphasise the cyclical nature of developing occupational expertise.

The CPD includes activities, case studies, videos, animations and downloadable resources to support educators. It takes approximately 20-30 mins per module totalling 3 hours.

The modules

Step 1

Engage standards

This module offers guidance on ways to encourage learners to engage the standard through the processes of moving from competence to excellence and resetting standards.

Step 2

Demonstrate Excellence

The module explores why it is crucial for learners to know what the highest levels of performance look like in their skill. It focuses on establishing core and higher order competencies, and ways to practise and demonstrate excellence.

Step 3

Practice

This module covers the importance of simulating high pressure environments and explains ways to integrate pressure tests into the curriculum. Factors to consider when designing a pressure test are also covered.

Step 4

Assess

This module focuses on the methods of marking used in competitions by our WorldSkills UK judges. It explores ways to increase challenge in pressure tests and the use of marking criteria for excellence.

Step 5

Reflect

This module explores the benefits of reflection and its use in future planning and development. The psychological characteristics of developing excellence (or PCDEs), and how they can be used to support learners, are also touched on.

Step 6

Feedback

This module offers guidance on best practice in giving feedback to learners. Feedback is fundamentally important as it supports the learner’s developing ability to realistically evaluate their own performance, while giving them the benefit of specific insights from an experienced practitioner.

Step 7

Repeat

This module examines the act of repetition and why it is no less important than any other step in the process of developing excellence. The act of repetition plays an important role in building and consolidating the unconscious memory of how to perform a skill; it also helps with the recall of information.

Moving from Competence to Excellence CPD will:

  • explain the process of moving from competence to excellence, through raising standards and the identification of core and higher order competencies

  • guide the embedding of pressure testing to drive high performance in technical and vocational education

  • raise awareness of the psychological characteristics of developing excellence (PCDEs) and the role they play in preparing learners for the best start in work and life

  • provide skill-specific insights into global best practice and innovative international training practices.

  • extend your professional development and working with technical and vocational learners

  • endorsed by NCFE and on completion a certificate is awarded

Further resources for educators

The WorldSkills UK Learning Lab is powered by international best practice making world-class skills development accessible for all.

The Hub has a balanced approach, and I like that the content is broken down into little chunks. I did most of it on my phone in my spare time. It was something that I was kind of getting addicted to doing because it was so interesting.

Paul Powers, a Tutor in computing and computing science,

The Hub is based on employability and developing those related skills. I would definitely recommend it to colleagues and training providers.
