Rosie’s passion for the aviation industry ignited when she left school, prompting her to embark on an apprenticeship with Airbus. It was during this time that she discovered WorldSkills UK, particularly through their aircraft maintenance competitions, which she eagerly participated in.

Reflecting on her selection for WorldSkills UK, Rosie expressed, “It really is an honour, absolutely amazing. I never expected it at 18 when I started in my first year and was competing regionally. It’s been an amazing experience.”

Having achieved two national finals, including a gold medal in 2022, Rosie’s friends and family are ecstatic about her success. “They are over the moon; they know how hard I’ve been working for it. They are really excited and coming out to Lyon to support me,” Rosie shared.

When asked about her preparations for the competition in Lyon, Rosie highlighted her regular training and recent participation in an International Pressure Test in Finland with five other countries, describing it as a valuable learning experience.

Regarding her career, Rosie emphasised how the competition has broadened her knowledge, especially in aircraft maintenance versus manufacturing. “It’s been like being a jack of all trades, which is unusual in this industry. Knowing a little bit about everything makes me more skilled and versatile,” Rosie noted.

Rosie, a technical training officer specialising in aeronautical engineering in Flintshire, North Wales, dedicates herself to teaching apprentices from Airbus through their first year and guiding them towards their engineering qualifications.

Rosie completed her Pearson BTEC Level 3 in aeronautical engineering, which she credits for providing hands-on experience crucial in the engineering industry. “When I was in school, I knew I wanted to go into engineering and opted for a more practical route rather than A-levels,” Rosie explained. “The BTEC gave me hands-on experience, which is essential in the engineering industry.”

Looking forward to WorldSkills Lyon, Rosie is excited about showcasing her skills at an international level. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience and having my family there to support me will make it even more special,” Rosie shared enthusiastically.

Reflecting on her journey with WorldSkills UK, Rosie affirmed, “If it weren’t for WorldSkills UK, I wouldn’t have the opportunities I have now. At 22, I wouldn’t be in the job I am in. It has opened so many doors, and I’m sure it will continue to do so.”
