Finn, who grew up in Salisbury, is a second-year Applied Software Engineering student at Cardiff University, and he is now gearing up for an exciting challenge at EuroSkills Herning 2025, where he will be competing in the Web Technologies category.
After earning a Bronze medal at the WorldSkills UK National Finals in November 2024, Finn is now ready to represent Team UK on the European stage. His impressive skill set in web development, combined with his determination to succeed, has set him up for success as he heads to Denmark to compete against Europe’s best young talent.
Finn’s preparation for EuroSkills includes weekly training sessions with a former competitor, along with regular communication with his Training Manager, Valentin Adamescu, who sets tasks designed to stretch and strengthen his skillset. Alongside this, he’s gaining practical experience through a part-time job where he works with one of the frameworks used in the competition. “I’m currently working with Lipid Maps, which is a company that uses the same tools as the competition, so it’s been really useful hands-on experience,” he shares.
The WorldSkills UK journey has already had a major influence on Finn’s career. It’s confirmed his ambition to go into web development and helped him secure both a part-time job and an internship this summer at Cardiff University, where he will be working with the language department to develop an interactive language tool. “It’s definitely opened doors for me,” Finn says. “WorldSkills UK has made my CV stand out, and the experience helped me land both my part-time job and the internship.”
As the competition has shifted its focus more towards back-end web development, Finn feels it aligns well with his long-term goals. “I’d love to work for a major tech company one day—maybe Apple or Google. That’s the dream,” he adds.
EuroSkills Herning 2025 will be Finn’s first time travelling abroad, and he’s particularly looking forward to the opportunity. “I’ve never been abroad before, so going to Denmark is really exciting. I’m looking forward to exploring the country, learning about the culture, and meeting other competitors from across Europe.”
He highly recommends WorldSkills UK to anyone studying web technologies or a similar subject. “It really helps you stand out,” Finn says. “You build technical skills, gain experience outside of uni, and it makes a real difference to your CV. I’d say to anyone—just go for it.”
