Grŵp Llandrillo Menai | Lockheed Martin

When Evan signed up to take part in WorldSkills UK Competitions at his college, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, he thought it would be a fun way to try something new.  What he didn’t expect was just how much it would change his life, helping him secure his role as a Simulator Maintenance Engineer apprentice at Lockheed Martin.

“My success in competitions not only built my technical skills but my confidence too.  I had real experience to talk about in my interview and I could demonstrate my track record of excelling in real life work scenarios.  There is no doubt that competing helped me secure my apprenticeship.”

Evan’s training with WorldSkills UK, which is helping him to prepare for EuroSkills Herning 2025 and the selection process for WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, continues to support him in his apprenticeship role.  He explains that when he is faced with solving issues at work, he is able to draw on his technical training to help.

Growing up on Anglesey, Evan was interested in coding as a career, but an open day at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai introduced him to electronics, and it sparked his interest.  To help him pursue electronics as a career, Evan completed a BTEC before applying for his apprenticeship.

“I really believe BTECs are far better than traditional A Levels because they offer a more flexible way of learning.  I loved the mix of coursework, projects, and real work experience—especially my placement at Lockheed Martin, where I first discovered their apprenticeship programme.”

Evan couldn’t believe it when he got the call to say he was in the team to represent the UK in Electronics at EuroSkills Herning 2025 – Europe’s largest skills competition but says he couldn’t be happier.  The two things he is really looking forward to at EuroSkills is travelling to Denmark for the first time and meeting his fellow competitors to learn more about how they study electronics in their country.
