Denver’s journey with WorldSkills UK began in 2024, when he first competed in the Enterprise: Foundation Skills category. He was recommended by his course tutor at Pembrokeshire College, Tony Algieri, after being recognised as one of the top learners at the Life Skills Academy.

Following this success, and the enjoyment Denver gained from attending the National Finals in 2024, he was encouraged to enter the 2025 Wales Skills Creative Media competition. Along with his teammates, his creativity and commitment were recognised with a Highly Commended award, which led to an invitation to compete in the WorldSkills UK Finals, in the Creative Media: Foundation Skills category. Denver joined a team with Dylan, Raymond, and Phoebe.

The team was challenged to design and create a winter and Christmas-themed tote bag. The task required them to develop a digital design, sketch the concept by hand, apply the final design directly onto the tote bag under strict time pressure, and prepare a short presentation explaining their work. Denver described the experience as one of the most stressful of his life. At one point, the team believed they had made a critical mistake after slightly altering their original design. Despite these concerns, their creativity, teamwork, and resilience paid off, and they were awarded the gold medal at the Foundation Skills ceremony.

The experience extended beyond the competition itself. Competing in Cardiff was particularly nerve-wracking for Denver, who described feeling extremely anxious on the day. Following the competition, he had the opportunity to speak with Welsh Minister Vicky Howells, sharing both his personal journey and the team’s achievements. Denver also met with Ben Blackledge, Chief Executive of WorldSkills UK, where he spoke about the importance of making WorldSkills UK competitions inclusive for people with special educational needs, disabilities, and additional learning needs.

Denver credits WorldSkills UK with providing a significant boost in confidence, particularly through the Foundation Skills pathway. He describes the competitions as welcoming, supportive, and life-changing, highlighting the friendliness of the staff, judges, and fellow competitors. Denver believes that

Foundation Skills competitions play a vital role in empowering learners with disabilities by giving them confidence and a platform to succeed.

Denver has signed up as a WorldSkills UK Skills Champion. In this role, he hopes to inspire and mentor others by sharing his story across colleges and encouraging more learners to take part in competitions.

Denver’s journey from a Foundation Skills competitor to a WorldSkills UK Skills Champion demonstrates the power of resilience, encouragement, and opportunity. His story highlights how WorldSkills UK can transform lives, build confidence, and open doors for learners of all abilities.
