South West College | Anderson Mechanical Services

Andrew McCann, an apprentice in Plumbing and Heating from Aughnacloy, County Tyrone, is currently studying at South West College in Northern Ireland while working with Anderson Mechanical Services in Loughgall. Fully immersed in hands-on learning, Andrew is thriving in a practical environment — the kind of setting that suits him perfectly.

Growing up in a household where practical skills were a way of life, Andrew spent weekends and evenings helping his dad, a joiner. “I always knew I wanted to do something hands-on,” he says. “But I decided to branch out from joinery and expand my skill set, which led me to plumbing and heating.” Outside of work and college, Andrew enjoys restoring older cars — another outlet for his practical mindset. “I’m into anything hands-on, really.”

Andrew’s journey into WorldSkills UK began when a college lecturer encouraged him to enter. “I didn’t really know what I was getting into at first,” he admits, “but I’m really glad they encouraged me.” That encouragement led him to compete at the SkillBuild UK National Final in 2022. His performance earned him a place in Squad UK, and now, he has been selected for Team UK for EuroSkills Herning 2025.

Being chosen to represent the UK means a lot. “It’s a big deal,” Andrew says. “You’re representing your country — it’s a great experience.” His employer and family are right behind him. “My boss is really supportive and always checks in to see how my training is going. He’s been great about giving me time off,” he explains. “And my dad’s always encouraging me to practice at home.”

To prepare for EuroSkills Herning 2025, Andrew is taking part in intensive in-person training blocks every 4–6 weeks. “The training’s taught me new ways of doing things — faster and more efficient techniques that I’ve already started using at work,” he says.

Looking to the future, Andrew hopes to one day run his own business. “That’s the goal — to work for myself,” he says. But for now, he’s focused on making the most of the opportunity to compete on the international stage. Having previously attended EuroSkills Gdańsk 2023 as a spectator, he’s excited to now step into the arena as a competitor. “It blew me away. So I’m really looking forward to competing in Herning.”

Would he recommend WorldSkills UK to other students? No hesitation. “If you get the opportunity, go for it and give it your all. You might never get a chance like this again.”
