Why did you choose to get involved in skills competition activity?

I got involved in skills competitions as I think young apprentices should be given this opportunity to excel in their field - something that was not available when I was training. It provides them with a once in a lifetime experience, doing something which they love and have chosen as a career.

What practical things do you do to embed skills competition activity into the curriculum?

I believe the most important thing that can be embedded from competition activity is to focus on tasks such as time management, self-analysis on quality, and continually looking for areas to improve each process. This helps students focus on key attributes that are important for success in competitions and in industry.

How did you ensure equality of opportunity when selecting participants for your competitions?

Our competitions are open to any student wishing to compete. Riverpark Training promotes and advertises competition to all students, which gathers a lot of interest.

What have been the main challenges you encountered in relation to organising and delivering skills competition activity?

The main challenges in preparing students for a competition would be allocating specific training time to prepare for an event.

How have you overcome these challenges?

We scheduled additional specific training time for them on Saturdays at the training centre. This allowed us to give the training required to assist them with competition.

How has your organisation benefited from participating in skills competition activity?

Riverpark Training has the highest achievement record over the last 10 years for competitors in the motor industry at national and international level. This achievement has enhanced our reputation for delivering extremely high-quality training in our field.
