When Yasmin first got involved with WorldSkills UK, she had no idea just how far it would take her. It wasn’t just about developing technical skills; it also helped build her confidence, shape her career direction, and strengthen her self-belief.
Competing in welding, Yasmin embraced the challenge of improving her craft through high-level training and competition.
“WorldSkills UK taught me the importance of doing things properly and doing them right the first time. That’s something I’ve taken straight into the workplace.”
Now working full-time in the welding industry at GYS UK, Yasmin continues to apply the precision and discipline she developed through the competition, using techniques she learned during training every day on the job.
“It gave me so much confidence. I know I’m capable, and I know the standard of work that’s expected in a professional environment.”
Her passion for welding and her desire to support others led her to become a WorldSkills UK Skills Champion. She now shares her story to inspire the next generation of skilled professionals.
“I wanted to become a Skills Champion to show other young women that they can do this too. When I first started you didn’t often see girls in welding, but that’s changing. I want to be part of that continue change.” “WorldSkills UK taught me the importance of doing things properly and doing them right the first time. That’s something I’ve taken straight into the workplace.”
Yasmin is keen to see more women enter skilled trades and understands the importance of visibility and representation.
“It’s still a male-dominated field, but I’ve seen things improve since I started. If someone sees me welding and thinks, ‘If she can do it, maybe I can too,’ then that’s a win.”
As a Skills Champion, Yasmin has already taken part in speaking events to help raise awareness about careers in welding and the value of technical education.
Her message to anyone thinking about getting involved in WorldSkills UK is simple:
“Go for it. You’ll grow so much — not just in your skill, but in confidence, time management, and mindset. You’ll meet great people and open doors you didn’t even know existed.”
