Pembrokeshire College | Haven Engineering

Luke, a Level 3 Welding Apprentice from Pembrokeshire, is currently developing his skills at Pembrokeshire College, where he trains one day a week. The remaining four days are spent at Haven Engineering, where he gains invaluable hands-on experience in the welding industry. This mix of classroom learning and practical experience has allowed Luke to build a solid foundation for a promising future in the field. His dedication and passion for welding have now led him to represent Team UK at EuroSkills Herning 2025 — a remarkable milestone in his career.

Like many others, Luke was unsure about his direction after finishing school. However, after attending Pembrokeshire College, he found a supportive environment that helped him explore his options and eventually discover his passion for welding. “I never really had confidence in myself,” he explains. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I always tried my best.”

After exploring various courses, Luke found a real interest in welding — and decided to pursue an apprenticeship to build his skills.
“With an apprenticeship, you get college support and real experience on the job. You’re learning and earning — and that’s hard to beat,” says Luke.

Luke’s journey to EuroSkills Herning 2025 began with a simple question from his lecturer: “My lecturer asked, ‘Do you want to give this competition a go?’ I wasn’t sure at first, but I said yes.”

That one decision set him on a path of national, and now international, opportunities. From a small in-house competition at college to the Welsh heats, and then on to the WorldSkills UK National Finals 2024, where he earned a Highly Commended award for his performance. Now, Luke has been selected to represent Team UK at EuroSkills Herning 2025 in Denmark. “I was just happy — it’s exciting. I’m really looking forward to the chance to travel, meet new people, and see how I perform on a European stage. Whatever happens, I’ll learn from it and keep improving. I’m taking each stage as it comes and giving it everything — with my sights set on WorldSkills Shanghai 2026.”

Luke credits the support from his family, friends, college, and employer for his progress. “Everyone was super chuffed when they found out I’d made Team UK. My family, friends, college and employer have all been amazing. Haven Engineering has been really supportive — letting me take time off for training and always encouraging me.”

To prepare for the European stage, Luke is working closely with his training manager, Carl. He’s attending focused sessions in Wrexham and weekly evening training at his college to sharpen his skills. His involvement with WorldSkills UK has also made a significant impact on his confidence, both personally and professionally. “It’s really helped me come out of my shell — and that’s made a big difference in how I approach things on the job.”

Luke’s message to other young people considering competitions is simple:
“Definitely go for it. You learn so much about yourself and gain skills you just don’t get in a classroom. It really helps you stand out — and it looks great on your CV.”
