Northern Regional College | Mivan

Jamie Matthews, a joinery apprentice, is in the third year of his Level 3 apprenticeship with Mivan—a company known for fitting out high-end cruise ships and hotels. He trains through Northern Regional College, combining academic study with practical, on-the-job experience in a fast-paced industry.

Growing up in Ballyclare, Jamie was always drawn to hands-on work. His passion for joinery began early, helping his dad in the workshop at home. “I’ve always liked working with my hands,” he explains. “Being around tools and timber just felt natural to me.”

Jamie first got involved in WorldSkills UK through his local SkillBuild competition. After progressing to the WorldSkills UK National Finals, his talent was recognised—and he has now been selected to represent Team UK at EuroSkills Herning 2025. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Jamie says. “To be chosen as one of the few to represent the UK is an amazing feeling. It’s going to be life-changing.”

His family, friends, and employer have been incredibly supportive. ‘Everyone is thrilled for me,’ he says. ‘They see it as a fantastic opportunity, especially with the chance to travel with WorldSkills UK. Mivan, Jamie’s employer, has been really supportive, which comes as no surprise, as they are very encouraging of all their apprentices. They’re even nominated for an award for their apprenticeship programme.

Jamie’s preparation for EuroSkills Henring 2025 is already in full swing. He’ll soon be heading to Swansea to train with his Training Manager Andy and continues practising at home and at work. “It’s non-stop really! “But I’m learning so much. The techniques I’ve picked up through WorldSkills UK training have already helped me improve at work—and I’ve even been able to share them with others on the team.”

Looking ahead, Jamie plans to continue developing his skills with Mivan, but he’s also thinking long-term. “One day, I’d love to open my own business,” he says.

As for the competition itself, Jamie is eager to put his training to the test. “Competing on a European level is huge. I want to see where I stand, learn from others, and make the most of the experience. It’s all part of the journey—and I hope it leads to Team UK selection for WorldSkills Shanghai in 2026.”
