Tonicha competed in Chemical Laboratory Technician at WorldSkills UK in 2019 while completing her apprenticeship with Eurofins Forensic Services, where she continues to work today.
Competing with WorldSkills UK was a turning point in Tonicha’s career, giving her the confidence to challenge herself, develop new skills and discover opportunities she never imagined possible.
“When I first started my apprenticeship, I really struggled with imposter syndrome,” she says. “I didn’t think I was good enough, but WorldSkills UK completely changed that.”
Through the coaching, mentoring and development opportunities available throughout the programme, Tonicha began to recognise what she was capable of achieving. Looking back, she believes the experience shaped both the professional and the person she is today.
“WorldSkills UK gave me confidence in my own abilities. It helped me develop not only technically, but personally too. I genuinely don’t think I’d be where I am today without it.”
Inspired by her own journey, Tonicha is passionate about encouraging others to take part. She regularly shares her experience with apprentices and colleagues at Eurofins Forensic Services and now gives back as a WorldSkills UK Skills Champion.
“I want people to see that these opportunities are for everyone. Stepping outside your comfort zone is scary, but that’s where you grow.”
This September, Tonicha will travel to Shanghai as a WorldSkills UK Skills Champion, supporting Team UK at the world’s largest skills competition. Returning to the WorldSkills stage as an ambassador is something she is incredibly proud of.
“I’m really looking forward to supporting Team UK, meeting people from across the world, sharing my journey to inspire others, and helping showcase the incredible talent we have in the UK.”
Having experienced the pressures of competition herself, Tonicha understands exactly what competitors are feeling.
“My biggest piece of advice is to trust your training. You’ve earned your place, so believe in yourself and enjoy every minute of the experience.”
For anyone considering taking part in WorldSkills UK, her message is simple:
“Just do it. You never know where it might take you. It changed my life, and it could change yours too.”
