Humphrey Perkins School
Christine Greenhall, Head of Careers for Humphrey Perkins School is a WorldSkills UK LIVE devotee. “This was my third visit! I think it gets better each year, with more contributors each time. It’s popular with our students who give good feedback each time and they always enjoy it. We can't bring all our students for financial reasons, and there's often a bit of a battle to get on the coach!”
Seeing students engaged and taking part in activities is a strong part of what LIVE is all about, “I think seeing one of our students on the stage in one of the shows was probably the highlight, it was one of the live science experiments. The stands that were interactive and they could have a go were the ones that were most popular.” The range of exhibitors was also a strong component. “We had a walk round, there was a good range of provision.”
The dates of the event suits the schedule of when students are starting to think about their next steps, says Christine, “November is good timing, for year 10s in particular, to get them thinking about options and possibilities and showing them what's out there, so they can start to look towards what they’re going to do beyond their GCSEs. LIVE often allows them to see things that they didn’t know existed before. Plus, it’s the size and scope, definitely.
It’s the amount of skills and opportunities for students consider that is part of the event’s unique appeal. While some visitors may take time to process what they’ve experienced, others have an immediate reaction. “One came back with an interest in aviation that they hadn't considered before, which was positive. There are a couple of others that said "oh, I haven't thought about that, I'd like to look into that now."
