Graeme explains how it felt to be selected for Squad UK and how our training has helped to boost his skills and set his ambitions high.
Graeme Nevin decided to take a technical rather than A Level route as the first step towards a successful and rewarding career. “I chose an apprenticeship because I knew it was a guaranteed job placement and right out of school I decided that having a trade behind me would be the best option for my future.”
He first heard of WorldSkills UK Competitions through a tutor at his technical college who inspired him to take part. He was successful at the National Qualifiers in 2019 and went on to compete in the National Finals later that year held as part of WorldSkills UK LIVE at the NEC Birmingham and attracting thousands of spectators where his skill and determination were rewarded with a Bronze Medal.
Aside from the technical training, WorldSkills UK Competitions are a chance for competitors to learn from their peers and developing relationships, Graeme agrees,
“I’ve learned so many tips and tricks for my trade from the judges at the previous competitions as well as fellow competitors which has definitely helped me in my career. I’ve also made some great friendships which hopefully will last a lifetime.”
Asked what advice he has for anyone thinking about entering WorldSkills UK Competitions Graeme says, “I’d say do it! It’s an incredible experience and you meet so many people and see so many different places.”
Being selected for Squad UK has been a great achievement for Graeme, “I was ecstatic! I never expected to get this far so everything after this moment is a bonus and I’ll take it in my stride.” He’s in the running to be selected for Team UK and the opportunity to represent the UK at EuroSkills, or WorldSkills where he would be expected to pit his skills against competitors from over 60 countries. It’s a challenge he’s definitely up for, “It would mean everything to me to compete internationally. It’s such an adventure and a huge challenge to overcome, I can’t wait!”
Graeme has his career ambitions set high saying, “I would love to eventually work for a company like Aston Martin or Bentley.”
An immediate issue to overcome is the COVID-19 pandemic. “It has definitely hindered my career recently, but things have been getting back to normality slowly but surely.”
