Specialist Volunteer Roles

We aim to give all our volunteers a valuable experience and provide the best possible training and support, as well as creating opportunities for volunteers and visitors to meet employers and learn about career opportunities.

Specialist Volunteer Roles

  • Careers Advisers

    This role provides careers advice to visitors at the show. You must be employed by one of our partners and be trained in delivery of impartial careers advice and guidance.

    You will be engaging with visitors in an informal setting to provide impartial information and guidance on career and education options that best suit them. You will update the job and training opportunities on our Next Step Boards and showcase our new digital careers tool, the SACU Spartan Test, on PCs and iPads during the event.  You will also support in the new Employability Skills Zone and track the number of interactions with visitors.

    There is also an opportunity to support our volunteering development programme for NEET (those not in employment, education and training) volunteers. 

    Training: Virtual training in early October and on-site briefing Wednesday 16November.

    Shifts: Live days: 17 – 19 November, 9am – 4pm.

  • Media, PR and Marketing Assistant

    Volunteering alongside the WorldSkills UK Marketing team and onsite media team you will be involved in a range of activities including shadowing camera men and helping to share The Skills Show with the broadest audience possible on social media platforms. In order to fulfil this role you need to be fluent in English, have an interest in marketing, event photography or social media and be prepared to carry equipment linked to cameras or phone for social media purposes. In addition, we are looking for individuals to help our PR team with media work at the event, promoting all the activities taking place.  Some PR experience would be preferable. However, it’s more important to have good written and spoken English, be confident and well presented and a calm head under pressure.

    Shifts: Live days: 17 – 19 November, 8am – 5pm.

  • Information Point Customer Service Mentor

    Providing crucial support and mentoring for our information point volunteers, you will be based on the information desks as a volunteer but also supporting student volunteers. Volunteers in this role must be employed by one of our partners and been trained in delivery of customer service and comfortable leading and coordinating teams of volunteers.

    Training: On-site briefing Wednesday 16 November.

    Shifts: Live days: 17 – 19 November, 8am – 4pm.

  • Stage Support – Spotlight and Showcase

    This role supports the smooth running of the interactive Spotlight stages where professionals deliver career talks.  Working closely with Spotlight Stage Managers and stage Comperes and speakers you’ll ensure that the activity runs smoothly and to help drum up attendance to the talks. You will be enthusiastic and comfortable in a hands-on role responding to the requirements of staff, exhibitors and other volunteers at the show.

    Shifts: Live days: 17 – 19 November, 8am – 4pm.

  • Compere

    We are looking for 10 enthusiastic individuals with specific skills in public speaking and performing to compere four Spotlight stages and one Staff Room stage. The stages host industry experts who give visitors insight into different careers. Comperes are needed to engage with the audience and sometimes the performers, think on their feet and generate questions / interaction to foster audience response and help ensure there is no ‘dead air’. Comperes should be outgoing, bold, positive and full of enthusiasm to create an energy that the audience feed off. All applicants must be from a registered partner organisation and be aged 17-25 at the time of The Skills Show.

  • Competition Support Volunteer

    These volunteers will support the national finals of the skills competitions, taking place at The Skills Show, NEC Birmingham. Volunteers play an essential role in competitions by supporting the quality assurance process, verifying the scores and marks awarded to each competitor or team taking part.

    Thursday 17 to Saturday 19 November 2016

    Who can volunteer:

    Individuals involved in WorldSkills or EuroSkills skills competitions   

    Category:

    This role is predominantly office based, but may involve some working on The Show floor, interacting with competition organisers to ensure results are collected and processed efficiently.

The basics

Experience required is specified in the role descriptions above and all volunteers must be 16 years or over by 1 September 2016.

All show team specialist volunteers will need to attend an on site familiarisation and briefing on Wednesday 16 November, plus the days required before, during or after the show. For some roles there will also be virtual training offered in October.

You will be given a volunteer uniform (e.g. t-shirt, jumper) which you are required to wear at all times whilst on site. You will need to provide your own dark trousers or skirt and comfortable footwear; trainers are acceptable.

Expenses

We will pay up to £10 per day for your travel to and from the event. You will only be able to claim this by providing a receipt or proof of your travel. All expenses must be claimed with a receipt attached to them and counter signed by a volunteer team leader. Expense claims for volunteers will be handed out by team leaders and the volunteer finance team will deal with any inquiries onsite.

College students volunteering with their college will claim any travel costs back through their college and will not be eligible to receive reimbursement by The Skills Show.


Note: To keep travel costs down, travel should be booked in advance and restricted to economy class.
