Who is this competition for?

Any welder who is currently under training may enter the SkillWeld National Welder Competition. They must be proficient in MMA and TIG and MIG/MAG. Their age will not be an obstacle to the final result of the SkillWeld 2008 competition outcome. However, selection of the candidate who may go to Canada in 2009 to represent the UK in the World Skills Competition will depend on them having been born after 1st January 1987.

What does the competition prepare you for?

The competition places competitors within the role of the welder by judging their welding skills against the industry’s standards.

Welding reaches across all industries as part of manufacturing, construction or maintenance processes. A welder may be employed or self-employed and work in a wide range of commercial, community or public sector organisations. With the continued development of sophisticated alloys and their applications, the need for welders to have higher levels of skill is of paramount importance.

What does the competition cover?

The competition is designed and judged to meet employers’ expectations and requirement that apply throughout the industry. The competition tests a competitor’s performance in a selection of tasks drawn from the welder’s role.  These tasks will include

  • the interpretation of technical drawings and instructions,
  • equipment set up,
  • selection of consumables and
  • the completion of a welded structure.

Competitors are also judged for their ability to apply their job knowledge, and for their applied understanding of personal protection and health and safety issues.

Subject to demand, the competition will have regional heats which will lead to a national final competition.  If they meet the required standard, the winners of the national finals competition may be nominated for the short list for the UK’s team for the WorldSkills Competition in 2009.

What happens if I win?

UK Gold winners will be invited to a high profile national awards event.
