About the competition - Mobile Robotics

Mobile Robotics screening test:  Placing individuals into productive teams is one of the most important activities of any educational or business environment. However, it is also one of the least considered components. Much attention has been given to selection, performance measurement, retention and progression activities in the literature, but too little to the most fundamental task of them all - forming the team. This test will be one of the methods used to help the Mobile Robotics experts make the shortlist of teams for the event in June 2008.

Mobile Robotics Screening Test:

There are two screening tests to be completed prior to the competitions:
1. online personality test
2. skills assessment

Complete and submit the result of this screening test by 2 May 2008. Go to: http://similarminds.com/pref_jung.html. Follow the online directions and complete all test questions. Print the results page to a PDF file (name the file using your first and last name, i.e. Steve Prior.pdf) and then submit the PDF of your results via email to:

s.prior@mdx.ac.uk

Live competitions may be subject to a non-attendance fee. Please read the Competition Rules to find out more.

Who is this competition for?

The mobile robotics competition is designed for two individual competitors to work as a team. The competitors may work for the same company, attend the same training establishment or be two individuals from different centres.

The competition is for robotics technicians under 25 years of age. It is designed to attract entrants with all levels of expertise and related robotics qualifications.

What does the competition prepare you for?

The competition places you within the world of the robotics engineer. A robotic engineer will design robots, maintain them, develop new applications for them, and conduct research to expand the potential of robotics. This is a rapidly developing field, with advances in computing constantly opening up new possibilities for robotics applications. Robotics engineers must have the same disciplined attention to detail that is required of all engineers, but the relative novelty of the field puts an additional premium on creativity. Robotics engineers can put their technical and creative skills to use in designing and developing robotics technology that builds, manufactures, repairs, and helps people do the things that were not previously feasible.

What does the competition cover?

This is a challenging and tough one-day practical competition. The scope of the competition covers the important features of the job role. Competitors must:

  • Problem solve
  • Carry out mobile robot system design
  • Assemble a mobile robot according to manufacturer’s specifications
  • Design a control program
  • Connect a mobile robot to its control system
  • Commission a mobile robot to carry out its correct function to solve a series of practical operational problems.
  • Interpret hardcopy/electrical forms of manufacturer’s documents.

Competitors have to demonstrate skills drawn from all the above aspects of robotics.

What happens if I win?

The winners of the national final will be invited to a high profile awards ceremony.

Subject to eligibility, outstanding national winners may be invited to compete for a place in the UK’s team for the WorldSkills Competition.
