About the competition - Mechanical Engineering CADD

The competition will test a competitors’ performance using CAD to produce 2D technical drawings, 3D models and 3D assemblies. In addition, higher level competitors will be required to produce animations that include GDT (Gometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing) in technical drawings.

Competitors should be fully conversant with BS/ISO drawing standards.

Who can enter?

This competition is intended for those undertaking a relevant computer aided design programme of study or training at level 3 (advanced) or level 4 (higher).

Advanced: equivalent to two to seven years of training and/or experience of employment, or a level 3 qualification.

Higher: equivalent to at least five years of training and/or experience.

How many can enter?

There are no restrictions on the number of competitors that can enter from any one organisation.

Assessment criteria

Level 3 (advanced):

  • Use parametric modelling techniques to produce parts
  • Create an assembly from modelled and given parts
  • Produce exploded views and drawings
  • Produce technical drawings from a given part

Level 4 (higher):

All of the above plus:

  • Produce animations of moving assemblies
  • Produce animations of exploded views
  • Produce technical drawings with GDT

Competition structure

Stage one: enter online between 7 January – 9 April 2009.

Stage two: competitors compete in a heat.

Stage three: highest scoring competitors across all heats that meet the required standard will be invited to compete at the UK final.

There is a City & Guilds qualification available for this competition.

There is the possibility of progressing to an International WorldSkills competition.
