Who is this competition for?
This competition is for young CADD technicians with up to 7 years related education, training and/work in the sector.
What does the competition prepare you for?
The competition places you in the role of the CADD technician. Computer aided design and drawing
(CADD) has a role in all branches of engineering as well as in architecture, construction and
manufacturing. CADD technicians use CADD software to produce 2D and 3D designs and specifications
on a wide variety of projects. These vary in scale from small mechanical components such as dies
and tools, to large structural engineering schemes such as bridges. CADD is used extensively where
any object needs to be designed and tested prior to production. It is applied to many industries
from engineering to landscape gardening, clothes and jewellery design.
CADD generally falls into two categories:
- Surface modelling
- Solid modelling
The attributes of a competent CADD technician are:
- Knowledge of the practical applications of engineering design principles
- Good numeracy and computer literacy
- Good communication skills
- Appreciation of material processes
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and construction techniques for the industry with which one works
- Good analytical skills
- Creative flair
What does the competition cover?
The competition is in two stages:
Stage one
Once you have registered, competition tasks will be made available for you to download from
the 1st - 14th April 2008
Please note that once you have downloaded the competition tasks you will have 48 hours to
complete and submit your entry to this years competition.
Stage two
The top 10 highest scoring competitors from the stage one are invited to attend a two day
live UK final competition in summer 2008. Those who surpass the national standard in the UK live
final may have the opportunity to represent the UK in either Calgary 2009 or London 2011.
To be illegible to enter the WorldSkills Competition 2009, Canada, competitors must be born
on or after 1 January 1987. For competitors interested in entering WorldSkills 2011 in London,
competitors must be born on or after 1 January 1989.
There is a City & Guilds qualification available for this competition.
There is the possibility of progressing to an International WorldSkills competition.
What happens if I win?
UK gold winners will be invited in a high profile national awards event.
Subject to eligibility, outstanding winners may be invited to compete for a place in the UK's
team for the WorldSkills Competition.
