Who is this competition for?
These competitions are for any technician who has been involved in CNC milling for up to 7 years through relevant training, work experience and/or employment.
What does the competition prepare you for?
The competitions place you within the role of the CNC machinist. CNC machinists use
computer numerically controlled (CNC) machine tools to cut, drill, shape and finish products and
components used in the engineering and manufacturing sectors. They work primarily with metals, but
also deal with wood, composite materials and plastics.
CNC machining technicians manufacture all types of components and articles, especially those
that need to be machined to very exacting standards of finish and dimensional accuracy such as
components for surgical operations, aerospace and civil engineering.
Machinists program the CNC machine tool with data taken from technical drawings. Some
machines display the section on a screen so that the process can be worked out visually.
What does the competition cover?
There are two stages for these competitions.
Stage 1: competitors submit a program for a given component. This is judged for accuracy and
content.
Stage 2: highly scoring competitors from stage 1 are invited to compete in a national final
competition that will take place over 2 days.
The Stage 2 competition will require competitors to write a program for a particular machine
that will then be used to manufacture the component.
The skills tested will include the ability to:
• manufacture components with flat faces, angled faces, internal and
external profiles, slots. Steps, holes that are linearly or circularly pitched, and special
profiles such as concave and convex
• select and set the appropriate holding devices
• select and set appropriate tooling
• operate and supervise the operation of the machine throughout the process
• read engineering drawings and convert these into machining programs
• apply their theoretical knowledge
• maintain high standards of healthy and safe working practices .
What happens if I win?
UK Gold winners will be invited to a high profile national awards event.
Subject to eligibility, outstanding national winners may be invited to compete for a place in
the UK’s WorldSkills team.
