What does the competition prepare you for?
The competition places you within the role of the plumbing and heating engineer. Plumbing and heating engineering involves planning, installing and maintaining sheet weatherings on roofs, a range of pipework installations for hot and cold water, and heating and gas in private, commercial and heritage buildings.
What does the competition cover?
There are 2 distinct competitions in plumbing and heating:
• Plumbing and heating pipework
• Lead sheet weatherings
Each competition tests performance in a selection of tasks drawn from the plumbing and
heating engineer’s role. These tasks include planning and installing:
• Lead sheet weatherings
• Hot and cold water
• Gas and heating pipework in both copper and steel pipe
The skills tested through these tasks include:
• Interpreting plans
• Measuring and levelling
• Handling and cutting various materials
• Assembling installations.
What happens if I win?
Both competitions hold regional heats, from which the highest performing competitors are
selected to take part in 3-day national final competitions. Competition winners are invited to a
high profile national awards event.
Subject to eligibility, the winners of the pipework competition may be invited to compete for
a place in the UK team for the WorldSkills Competition.
