Construction, Britain's largest industry, covers every type of building work. From designing and
planning, to restoration and maintenance. Our construction and building services competitions allow
you to showcase these skills and more.
Cultural and Creative Arts
Within the UK, the cultural and creative sector is of great economic and social importance,
accounting for over 5% of gross domestic product, and growing at twice the rate of the economy as a
whole. The sector covers many careers that directly benefit other sectors because they add a wealth
of creative capabilities to other businesses and organisations.
There are two million people employed in over 100,000 establishments engaged in science and
engineering technology. This sector contributes approximately 10% of the UK’s gross domestic
product, and one third of the UK’s total exports.
IT and Business Administration
There are over 3.6 million workers in administrative roles in the UK. Another 1.7 million
workers have an administrative function as part of their specialist roles. Over 18 million workers
need administrative skills in order to fulfil their job roles. This means that most workers in the
UK require, as a minimum, IT and verbal communication skills. For more senior roles, organisation
and planning are also essential, together
with people management.
The Open Challenges are competitions for young people and adults who are either keeping their
options open, or building their general education, foundation and generic skills, or exploring the
range of activities that a sector might offer, or even hoping to set up their own businesses.
Personal, Social and Hospitality
Approximately 1.5 million people work within community, social and personal services,
representing 5.6% of the total workforce in the UK. Healthcare and medical services extend from all
aspects of patient recovery to assistance with long-term care, disabilities and emotional
difficulties. Working in this sector is challenging, but the variety and opportunities are endless
for talented and well-trained people. Whether one is a specialist or generalist, senior or junior,
everyone involved is a crucial member of a team that pulls together to make a difference to people’s
lives.
